The 2nd meeting of the 02129 Neighbor Alliance was held on Saturday, May 12th. We apologize profusely if you missed the invite. Our new email address got kicked back as spam for 90 out of the 99 emails that we sent, and we realized too late.
We had a great turn out, and were joined by City Councilmember Lydia Edwards and MA Representative Dan Ryan. We have support from both. They each spoke about the need for a comprehensive Master Plan for Charlestown.
A Master Plan for Charlestown would be a community-driven, neighborhood-wide planning initiative that will produce a framework to predictably shape the future of Charlestown, and identify opportunities to preserve, enhance, grow and address current quality of life issues. The effort will be organized by the Boston Planning & Development Agency (BPDA) in partnership with several City and State agencies, and will require the participation of the Charlestown community to be both meaningful and sustainable.
Charlestown is in a transformative period with thousands of residential units, corporate office space, restaurants and retail already approved. Neighboring developments such as Assembly Square and the Casino are also expanding and opening soon.
WE NEED A COHERENT AND CONSISTENT PLANNING PROCESS & A SEAT AT THE TABLE
The current process is broken – each project or development is planned and approved independently of each other. Community input is only gathered during the approval process, far too late for meaningful impact into the project. The added population will only compound our current issues. A comprehensive plan will consider all of these planned and future developments in relation to the existing neighborhood and its infrastructure.
Time is of the essence – A Master Plan will not be retroactive. The community needs a seat at the table at the planning level, before these developments reach the approval stage. This is the only way we can assure that the communities needs will be met and planned for.
If you are interested in the planning process that East Boston is currently in, check out this website:

Next Steps: Councilmember Lydia Edwards has heard our call for help and has responded! She will call for a hearing in Charlestown with the BPDA to discuss planning efforts. We will be in touch with more details.
In the meantime, we need to get the word out and keep the pressure on.
